Workshops for Theory of Knowledge (ToK)
Welcome to the Revision Village IB Theory of Knowledge (ToK) Workshop Collection. These workshops are designed to support students in their preparation for the IB ToK assessments: the Exhibition and the Essay.
What is in the Workshop Collection?
The IB ToK Workshops Collection is composed of workshops for the prescribed Essay titles organised by exam session, and will have workshops for all of the 35 Exhibition prompts. Each workshop provides resources that guide you from understanding the prompt or title to preparing to write your full response. The questions are designed with the assessment rubric in mind, so you will develop the relevant skills and consider all aspects to score in the top band. The workshops are accompanied by written mark schemes and a concise sample answer, as well as video explanations that further clarify the content and the best approach to the question. Finally, you can submit your responses to receive detailed, targeted feedback from Newton AI.
How should the Essay workshops be best used?
Essay workshops can be used to help you choose an essay title and then get you started on the Essay. Each workshop’s scaffolded questions help you understand what the title asks and guide you through the process of choosing your title. Once you have done this, the workshop will provide guidance for building a thesis, developing claims and counterclaims, and choosing evidence to support your claims. Students can complete whole workshops for the titles they are most interested in, or part of all workshops to help them narrow down their choice. Mark schemes, sample answers, video solutions, and Newton AI will support you every step of the way.
How should the Exhibition workshops be best used?
Exhibition workshops can serve as guidance for choosing a prompt and then writing the commentaries. Students can choose a few that are of interest to them already, or ones they struggle to understand. The questions are scaffolded from unpacking the key terms, through developing possible explorations of the prompt, to selecting objects to use in exploring ToK in the real world. Students can work through the questions in order or skip some questions to focus on the specific part of the Exhibition they need help with. The mark schemes, sample answers, video solutions, and Newton AI will support you every step of the way.
What is the difference between Open Study and Examination Mode?
This feature can be attempted in either Open Study or Examination Mode. The Open Study Mode will allow you to answer and review each question at your own pace. You can receive carefully tailored AI feedback and consult the written markscheme and video for each question at each step.
In Examination Mode, you submit all your answers when finished. You may choose to answer questions in any order you wish and go back to change answers before you submit. After completion, you will have access to all markschemes and video solutions, and you will receive AI feedback and an overall mark on your submitted work.
In Examination Mode, your answers will be saved so you can always return to them. In Open Study Mode, you can attempt each question anew.
How are the Essay workshops organised? Should I do them all?
The Essay workshops are organised by session and in the order of the IB’s publication of the prescribed titles. These titles are set by the IB each session and require careful reading to ensure understanding. If you have not chosen your title, you can dip into each workshop to get an understanding of what the titles are asking (or watch our First Look videos for similar help), and then narrow down your choice to complete the workshops for the titles you feel most drawn to.
How are the Exhibition workshops organised? How many should I do?
For the Exhibition, workshops for all 35 prompts will be available. They are organised into loose groupings that help you narrow your choice if you feel overwhelmed. This will allow you to choose workshops in areas of the course that you feel most interested in or comfortable with. You are encouraged to browse a range of prompts that look interesting before completing one or two workshops in order to make your final choice for your Exhibition.
What about the Optional Themes?
Exhibition workshops use a range of examples from the Core Theme and all Optional Themes, so all workshops are relevant to all students, regardless of which Optional Themes you studied in class.
How long are the Workshops?
You can complete a workshop from start to finish in 45 to 60 minutes. You can also start a workshop and come back to it later, as they are designed to help you build ideas and skills specific to ToK assessments rather than prepare for exam conditions.
How hard are the Workshops?
The workshops are marked medium to hard to reflect the complexity of working through the questions, and help you choose depending on your time or capacity on a given day. The level of difficulty does not indicate how easy or hard a given prompt or title is, as that depends on your understanding and interests.
