Paper 3 Case Studies for Mathematics

Welcome to the Revision Village IB Mathematics Paper 3 collection. These questions are designed to support students in their preparation for the IB Mathematics Paper 3 examinations.

What is in the Paper 3 Collection?

One component of the IB Mathematics external assessment is the Paper 3 exam. This exam focuses on problem-solving, modelling, and investigation. It presents extended response questions that require you to analyse unfamiliar problems, develop mathematical models, and communicate your reasoning clearly. It tests the ability to apply your learning rather than just use memorised procedures.

Our Paper 3 Collection includes IB exam-style questions that mirror the final exam format and span all course content, and topic-specific P3 questions that let you practice Paper 3 skills on individual topics earlier in the course. Each question comes with written mark schemes and video explanations in separate scrollable sections, so you can view them side-by-side without losing your place. You can also submit your responses to Newton AI for detailed feedback.

How should the Paper 3 feature be best used?

IB Math students benefit from actively practising Paper 3-style questions throughout the course. With this feature, you can start with topic-specific questions, as you complete each topic in class, then move on to full IB exam-style papers later in the course. We recommend that you approach each question set as you would in the IB exam: read through all questions first, identify what's being asked, and then plan your approach. Each question part has a mark scheme and video solution, and you also have the support of Newton AI with you every step of the way.

What is the difference between Open Study and Examination Mode?

This feature can be attempted in either Open Study or Examination Mode. The Open Study Mode will allow you to answer and review each question at your own pace. You can receive carefully tailored AI feedback and consult the written markscheme and video for each question at each step.

The Examination Mode is a simulation of exam conditions. Under this mode, you submit all your answers when finished. You may choose to answer questions in any order you wish and go back to change answers before you submit. After completion, you will have access to all markschemes and video solutions, and you will receive AI feedback and an overall 1 - 7 mark on your submitted work. To best simulate exam conditions, we advise that you time yourself using the duration indicated.

In Examination Mode, your answers will be saved so you can always return to them. In Open Study Mode, you can attempt each question anew.

How are the Paper 3 questions organised? Should I go in order?

The Paper 3 questions are organised into two sections: Topic-specific questions and IB exam-style questions. Topic-specific questions focus on individual topics, allowing you to practice Paper 3 skills earlier in the course without needing to have covered all the course content first. We recommend starting with topic-specific questions early in the program, as you learn each topic in class, to become familiar with the structure and expectation of these types of questions. Then, when you have learned a larger portion of the syllabus content, you can attempt to work through our full IB exam-style questions. These IB exam-style questions can span content from the entire syllabus and mirror the actual exam format but they are organised into the topics they cover. For example, a question involving both complex numbers and calculus would be found under both Topic 1 and Topic 5, making it easy to find relevant practice questions. We suggest working through these questions in the later part of the course, particularly when preparing for mocks or final exams.

How long are the Paper 3 questions?

The IB Mathematics Paper 3 exam consists of 2 extended response questions worth 55 marks in total. It is to be completed in 75 minutes, meaning that there is just over one minute of time per marking point.

We have applied this expectation to our paper 3 questions as well. The more marking points per question, the more time it takes to complete. You will find the number of points per question, as well as the intended amount of time to complete the question, on each question card.

How hard are the Paper 3 questions?

As with IB exam questions, our Paper 3 questions consist of multiple parts which can be classified as easy, medium or hard. In general, the topic-specific questions, as a whole, are classified as medium difficulty while the IB-exam style questions are classified as hard; however, the difficulty level of each subpart is indicated in the right-hand column.

While many consider Paper 3 to be the hardest part of the examination requirements, many questions include easy subparts and/or 'Show that' questions. This allows you to use a given answer in a subsequent part, meaning you can continue on even if you get stuck at some point. For this reason, it is important to practice these questions to become familiar with a strategy for approaching the questions.
